A ban on smoking in all public places will take effect in England on July 1st 2007with many pub and restaurant owners fearing a considerable loss of business as a result. Lighting up a cigarette at the table after your meal, or at the bar will no longer be acceptable.

With the increased pressure on removing smokers from public places it is going to be more difficult for restaurants to capitalize on this element of their trade and, at the same time, meet the new social obligations. Outside eating is now a well-established factor in the restaurant trade but it is restricted to fine days which, as this year has shown, can be rather limited in the UK. |
