Leading the way
Ballauff, a company with more than 100 years of tradition, talks to Blinds & Shutters about its R & D,  and products and ranges which highlight its focus on design and interior fashion

Pinoleum has always been at the cutting edge of interior design with its stylish finish, subtle colourways and exclusivity. This is especially so with pinoleum blinds although the product has long been used as a wall covering, often using contrasting and complementary tones.

Ballauff, the originator of pinoleum, takes the issue of design very seriously – as you would expect from a French company with over 100 years of tradition – and focuses much of its R&D effort on ensuring that its products are leading the way in the world of interior fashion.

In recent years the company introduced its Shades of Nature range which make extensive use of natural reeds, such as bamboo, giving forward-looking designers an edge when working on new projects.

A further innovation came when Ballauff joined forces last year with the Little Green Paint Company to offer a choice of 120 colours, giving consumers and designers alike the opportunity to match their colour schemes perfectly.

The coloured finish can be applied to small batches or multi rolls of pinoleum and allows designers the opportunity to create the perfect bespoke environment for their clients.

Also, Ballauff has been promoting the use of sliding panels to be used as room dividers inside or, if the conditions are suitable, outside if required. Increasingly, however, the sliding panels are being introduced in the UK to help control sunlight and prevent glare.

New ranges of fabrics have been introduced to both enhance the alternative look of these panels and broaden their popularity and these include natural woven textiles, bamboo, wood, paper and jute.

To ensure that its products will stay at the forefront, Ballauff has announced yet another ambitious product launch – Bayadère. By using extremely delicate, high quality bamboo reeds in several contrasting colourways, Bayadère blinds have the look of a fine textile hanging at the window. When seen together with traditional pinoleum wall coverings, or placed adjacent to pinoleum screens – whether using traditional hardwood reeds or the more modern natural reeds – this exciting new blind fabric has created a unique development for this market sector.

It is also perfect as a roll up and roman blind and can be used as a draped roof covering giving a very rich and exotic feel to any space.

The bamboo reeds used for Bayadère have an intense shine and are available in six pastel colourways of citrus hues – Mediterranean blues to greens and topical mauves, as well as two warm neutrals.

The variation in the reed size is due to the build up of colour creating an almost printed effect. The stunning milky stripes are available in 180cm wide by 20 metre length rolls – the first time this combination has been offered in the UK, giving much greater flexibility in end-use.

The introduction of this exciting range serves to combine the natural effects and beauty of good quality bamboo together with a modern interpretation of colour and tonal mixture. Ballauff has succeeded in once again creating an innovative product which will allow designers even greater scope to let their imaginations run wild.
