| Solar solution for ‘cartwheel’ |

A recent refurbishment at the defence establishment posed some interesting problems for Motus systems T he defence establishment to the north of Bristol is responsible for providing vital support to thousands of military personnel deployed around the world. A recent refurbishment to this extensive complex created a specialist solar shading requirement and Kensington – a contract blind specialist in Bristol – was selected to find a solution that would suit the aesthetic and operational criteria of this iconic landmark. The brief included a number of cassetted screen roller blinds but the main challenge lay in finding a roof-light system to cover the twelve segments of a gigantic aerial ‘cartwheel’. With a span of more than 5.5 metres and towering some 9 metres above the ground, the circular roof-light provided a challenge that Kensington relished. With nearly thirty years of experience in the trade and numerous high-profile installations ‘under its belt’, Kensington felt it was better placed than anyone to take up the challenge. By working hand-in-hand with Motus Systems Kensington was able to deliver a system that both fulfilled the control requirements of the client and delighted the building contractors.
Motus believes it was its status as an independent motor supplier that meant that they were able to give impartial advice as to the most appropriate products for the application and the company believes its role in the market is unique. The company specialise in sourcing products from a wide variety of manufacturers and creating solutions that are tailor-made to the customer’s requirements. Motus says that this is one of the reasons for its success and its customer-focussed business ethos means that it takes the time to discuss the various features and requirements of a project before proposing the solution. Motus Systems say that with such huge variations in operational requirements from one application to the next, it is impossible to ‘shoe-horn’ every project into an off-the-peg system and it believes that its flexible approach is infinitely more effective. In the case of the recent Bristol project, it was decided to install German-made motors in both the roller blinds and the skylight systems which ensured that the controls system for both sets of blinds were compatible. It also provided the peace-of-mind and reliability that was paramount for the high-level installation with its obvious access limitations. For Motus Systems – whose product range includes a huge spectrum of motorisation products from curtain tracks and skylight systems to tubular motors for roller blinds and awnings – this installation was another success story; company say that it was a classic example of how the needs of the client are a number one priority.
