Strength and stability the key to college shutters

A unique product was required to meet all the criteria specified for the timber shutters at Kings College

Bovis Lend Lease were contracted to carry out a major refurbishment of King’s College – one of the oldest and largest colleges of the University of London. During the development of the lecture theatres and social rooms, timber shutters were that would allow the natural light to filter through required for the windows.

The Challenge

Taylor Made Joinery consulted Timbmet on the best material to use for the manufacture of the timber shutters. It was important to have the oak timber look to match the other oak fittings within the building, but the 3-metre length of the sections, coupled with their proximity to radiators, posed a challenge. Solid hardwood was not suitable due to its instability in varying temperatures, but its aesthetic qualities were desired. In fact, the ambient conditions meant any timber of this length would be prone to buckle and warp, so a unique product was required to meet all the specific criteria.

The Timbmet Solution

The product solution was from Timbmet’s engineered range; an aluminium framed section wrapped with a White Oak veneer. This would give the shutters a uniform but natural oak appearance, with the strength and stability of aluminium.
Product testing was performed by Timbmet’s North American partner before it was shipped. The testing programme included a Boil Oven Boil Ambient Test (BOBA) and Vacuum Pressure Test. This gave Taylor Made Joinery the confidence to select the product to be used for the window louvres in several of the college rooms and study areas. Strong, stable and resistant to heat, it was ideal for use next to radiators. The overall finished effect complemented the traditional exterior of the building, and maintained the uniform timber look throughout.
